What can I do to prolong the life of my fence?

  1. Waterproof, or seal, wood on wood contact points on the fence. These are where pickets connect to stringers and stringers to posts.
  2. Use treated posts or metal posts to resist moisture and insect damage.
  3. Make sure concrete comes to or above ground level so water can't collect around base of wooden posts.
  4. Don't let vines grow on fence. These attract insects that will burrow into the fence. It also creates a lot of weight on the fence that can help to topple it in high winds.
  5. Direct water sprinklers away from fences.
  6. Don't pile dirt or compost against the fence.
  7. Don't plant trees or large shrubs against the fence. Remove "volunteers" growing next to fence. Plants should be planted far enough away that when mature will not be pushing on the fence with their branches or trunk.
